Do paintings need a description? (Vincent, Sundamp)

by Vincent
(Cork, Ireland)

In many art directories there is a place for "description" of the artwork.
Should the artist describe his/her artwork? Isn't this a job for art critics? Why not leave the viewer free to interpret the work in his own way?

Painting viewer is free
by: sundamp

A viewer is always free to interpret a painting in his own way regardless of reading an artist's written description. Someone who does otherwise is more of a reader than a viewer. I simply use the description field to note down any thoughts I have about the finished painting.
